Purpose: So, seeings I'm more than a little bit rusty... and been on a design kick lately, I felt like it was about time I challenged myself to do something new to bring my skills back up to par. This is the first of those challenges.

------

Background: Basically, the idea was to create an informational poster for a typeface using a limited range of colours (there's three here, simply because I couldn't get the Pantone mix I wanted) and only typographical elements. In this case, I opted to use the following characters to form the basis of the background: m, a, R, {, all in 55 Roman weight (excepting the m, which was in 75 Bold to allow more room). Also, I made sure to only use variants of Neue Helvetica (55 Roman [+ Italic], 57 Roman Condensed, 65 Medium, and 75 Bold). Body copy is taken directly from the aforementioned website.

------

Job spec: 3 Colour Pantone spot, 30"x40" @ 300dpi for gloss stock

This is definitely cool, mang!

I really dig the colors and I've spent at least five minutes trying to trace my eyes over the background without getting lost.

Ohhh, I like it. Why are you producing posters?

Look pretty. Do more of this.

And I had no idea there where so many weights. :O

I intend for it to become a series of all my favourite typefaces, so look out for ones like News Gothic, Rockwell, Bodoni, Univers, Garamond, and Goudy Old Style whenever I can be fucked getting around to them. I'm trying to be as versatile with as minimal function as I can... so yeah.

There's a lot of weights. They're useful to have hidden in your font folder

nice.

completely unrelated side note because i'm too beat to give any proper thoughts on the piece bro, but have you seen that helvetica movie?

I'm fucking loving the fact that the abstract shapes are made from the typeface itself (and the fact that if you do a series of these, including comic sans, they'll all look really powerful together...), But have you thought about tidying up some of the intersetions? Where the shapes nearly touch each other, but are just off by a fraction from a clean intersection?. I don't know, it'd just kinda keep with the swiss clinical style.

Damn, full view is not working. :shakefish:

I'll look at it later, though. I really want to see it. :(

 I actually sat there for about half an hour trying to get it to align perfectly to no avail... when one lines up, another two become unaligned. So I kinda had to bite the bullet and leave some slightly off because I didn't want to alter the glyphs any. Curses for Max and his not-quite-perfect glyph design!

Not seen the movie yet though, but I'm definitely planning on it.

It looks good. I think there's something to be said for making a strikiing image with only a limited range of colours. I've also always been facinated at how fonts can make art, it's a field I've always been interested in dabbling in but I never have. :slow:

Nice colours and shapes. Helvetica is one of my favourite fonts, it's timeless.

The only thing I'd point out is that you might consider turning off hyphenation and getting rid of the orphan on the last paragraph to give the content a nicer overall shape.
